ABOUT BANANA HOUSE
Our venue is the stunning Banana House – a boutique hotel in the village of Shela in Lamu Island. The hotel is set in a lush tropical garden with a swimming pool; an open air yoga studio; swahili day-beds; outdoor lounge space; and views of the tranquil Indian Ocean. The Natural Lamu Beauty Spa is also on site where guests can book a range of spa and wellness services including numerous massage treatments, facials, and skin rejuvenation among others.
The pristine fishing island of Lamu lies on the north coast of Kenya, in the Indian Ocean. Lamu was the first Swahili settlement in East Africa and to this day, a primary mode of transportation are traditional dhow boats and motor boats since there are no cars on the island. In addition to its Bantu roots, Lamu was historically influenced by Arab, Persian, and Indian people who participated in the spice trade. In turn, the primarily Muslim island incorporated these influences into its food, language and culture. As a result of the island’s rich history, Lamu is a UNESCO world heritage site – a hidden gem with a warm, beautiful and nurturing culture.
